CF-7
The Conecuh Valley Southern Railroad (CVSR) is a legacy short line started as an independent subsidiary of the Alabama, Florida & Gulf RR (AFG) in 1986. The lines that made up the NS spin-off railroad were light density, with traffic centered around Union Springs, Troy, Goshen and Andalusia AL. It would later acquire the Alabama & Florida RR line from CSX in 1988. Power was a collection of four CF-7 units and an occasional leased Geep from the AFG. As the AFG reimagined its operations by acquiring the former BN lines between Amory MS and Pensacola FL the decision was made to leave the CVSR as its own entity. AFG chose to keep the line at arm’s length, allowing it to keep operational and decision making control locally. The tenuous nature of these long neglected lines required overhead to be kept as low as possible in hopes the CVSR could survive on a dwindling traffic base. The CVSR was based in Troy AL and controlled much of the old CofGA western branch lines from Columbus GA into Andalusia AL . It also purchased the CofGA line from Eufaula, AL to Montgomery AL, crossing the western line at Union Springs.

By the 1990s, traffic was drying up and the CSVR found it had to rationalize. The Eufaula to Montgomery section was only operated from the diamond crossing at Union Springs to Montgomery for a time, until pulpwood traffic dried up. As a result, the whole line was removed in 1990. The Columbus -Troy segment also lost all traffic, and the line was once again abandoned from Hurtsboro, AL to Troy, AL by 1994. Troy become a bright spot, and the now slimmed down CVSR made its living around Troy and Andalusia. By the time AFG purchased the BN lines it watched its own original trackage slowly die off with the CVSR losing its physical connection to the AFG. Even after AFG formed the Florida & Gulf Industries (FGI) holding company which acquired the Florida & Gulf Coast Railroad (FGC) and held the AFG and CVSR operations, the corporate management saw no need to incorporate the small short line into its consolidated operations. The addition of the Alabama Midland RR (AMRR) restored a direct connection but few changes were made.

The same four CF-7s continued to ply the light rails and work the CVSR into the 2000s. Both units were overhauled in the mid 2000s and were repainted into original CVSR colors. by this time AMRR power assisted the CVSR during motive power shortages and even rebuilt the Troy to Goshen section so that AMRR grain trains could service a new poultry feed mill. FGI sent two SW Road Slug sets as permanent power to assist the aging CF-7s, but due to excepted trackage around Andalusia, there were no plans to retire these four units in the foreseeable future. A fifth CF-7 came to the CVSR via the Meridan & Bigbee in 2018 as the AMRR short line upgraded track and assigned heavier power at the paper mill in Pennington, AL. The ex-MB unit ran on the CVSR for years in tattered MB blue and yellow. It was finally overhauled and painted in the FGC corporate scheme with CVSR markings. It remains the only unit repainted into corporate colors. The four original units retain their original paint scheme and CofGA inspired logo.
