420-435 Series

The true four axle workhorse for the Florida & Gulf Coast Railroad (FGC) is the GP40-2 model. These units were purchased from various sources by the original Alabama, Florida & Gulf Railroad (AFG) and joined FGC units left by MDRail Transportation after they sold the FGC to Florida & Gulf Industries (FGI). Many of the AFG units retained their L&N inspired paint well into the FGI era and were assigned to road switching and local train service over the combined system. These units launched the Hurricane Intermodal Service in 2018, but were all but replaced as FGI added purpose built GP60, GP39M, GP39MB, GP49 and later SD40-2W and SD40-2F units to the roster.

As units were sidelined by derailments or severe failures, FGI contracted Stephens Railcar to begin rebuilding the ailing units into GP40-3 Wabtec Cab units similar to the SD40-3 rebuilds. GP40-2 units cycled in for overhaul and painting were set up as road slug mothers, allowing them to run with GP Road Slugs built from FGC GP40-2 cores in the mid 2000s. The Road slug sets proved very adept at heavy switching at slow speeds found around Clewiston , FL at the US Sugar operation run under contract with FGC. These also proved valuable working the slow switching at the paper mills on the AFG side of the system. As a result, FGI continued to order these sets from Stephens Railcar. With some GP40-2 cores unsuitable for rebuilding, Stephens Railcar began substituting and rebuilding GP50 cores into GP40-3 mothers and GP Road Slugs in 2021.

Road Slug use was not common on the AFG-FGC system until the Alabama Midland RR (AMRR) joined the fold in 2018. Due to the light branches and slow speeds on much of the Georgia-Alabama Grain Unit lines, AMRR used road slugs reduced wear on branches and allowed consistent movement of large heavy cuts of cars on the lines. As the FGC and AMRR rosters blended and mixed over the new combined system, AMRR slugs were tested on the FGC, and found to be perfect for US Sugar operations and heavy switching assignments across the system. As a result, FGI worked with Stephens Railcar to standardize the configuration to make motive power assignments easier across the FGC system.
