Florida & Gulf Industries (FGI) was not a stranger to 2000hp 38 series as its Alabama Florida & Gulf RR (AFG) purchased several SD38 and SD38-2 units over the years to work the AFG during the early 2008s. With the purchase of FGC from MDRail, several SD38 and SD38-2 units were permanently transferred to the FGC to cover vacancies left as MDRail sent its MDRail leased power home to the MDRail permanently. These units were used in mixed service, holding down classification duties at Tampa, Tallahassee, and Pensacola, where principal switching yard terminals were located. Others freely roamed the FGC Cross Florida Division where they worked assembling or sorting RockTrain aggregate moves between Birmingham, AL and sand pits in the panhandle region of Florida. In an obvious indication of the satisfaction of the model and its service on the FGC, FGI purchased the complete LLPX fleet of SD38-2 ex Reserve Mining units in 2019. These units were equipped with dynamic braking and were assigned to Rock Train service, replacing non dynamic brake equipped sibling that moved to full time yard and local service in the 2020s.
