SD40-2 SD40-2F SD40-2W SD40T-2
The backbone of Florida & Gulf Coast RR (FGC) and Alabama & Florida & Gulf RR (AFG) is the 40 series locomotives. Mainline power for local and interchange freight regularly use key mainlines to move freight to and from customers in Florida and Alabama to interchange points in Amory, MS and Birmingham, AL. This operational scheme was established by the MDRail controlled FGC and the later Florida & Gulf Industries (FGI) found this to be good measure with its own use of EMD 38 and 40 series units on the AFG. After the acquisition of the FGC by corporate holding company FGI, MDRail Transportation moved some of the MDRail owned locomotives back to home rails to address growing needs, leaving an acute power shortage faced by the FGC.
A group of former BN SD40-2s, ex MILW EMDX SD40-2s from the AGF and group of SD38 and SD38-2 units formed the six-axle roster for the combined AFG-FGC system. To replace MDRail units headed back to home rails, FGC purchased a group of SD40T-2 units which were filtering into the secondary locomotive market as UP retired and purged its roster of the model. These units would stabilize the FGC stable of six axle units until the Alabama Midland RR (AMRR) came on board and operations of the two roads merged. The AMRR brought with it former CNW SD45 units rebuilt into SD45M (SD40-2 internally) units along with lighter branch line power such as the ex MILW SDL39s, SD10s and a well maintained first generation six axle units. These were already in full use on the AMRR side, so any growth potential would see additional power needed.
Growth did come as a result of the FGC-AMRR combination. RockTrain branded aggregate service between Florida, Alabama and Georgia as well as regional intermodal under the FGC Hurricane Intermodal Service as it expanded on the AMRR side and developed terminal connections between the Florida Peninsula and interchange partner Georgia Road in Birmingham, AL. During this time, many of the standard SD40-2 and SD40T-2 units were pressed into RockTrain service. FGI found it had to address the growing motive power gap as these units increasingly moved into the RockTrain pool. With standard 40 series units now hard to find, FGI looked north toward Canada where CN and CP were both retiring SD40-2W and SD40-2F units. These units required substantial repair and modification to run in the US, and Stephens Railcar cycled units through its shops prior to FGC placing them in operation. These units were given the nickname “Snowbirds” by local railfans, alluding to the hundreds of Canadian citizens that came to Florida in the winter months to escape the cold and snow at home. These units filled manifest, Hurricane Intermodal and general traffic requirements. One interesting side note was the fact that FGI purchased what it could find at different times. The result was some CN SD40-2W units equipped with dynamics and some missing this typical FGC motive power specification. Dynamic equipped units typically worked trains moving over the FGC or AMRR into central and north Alabama, where the Appalachian foothills on the ex- GM&O lines and Georgia Road trackage rights into Birmingham, AL introduced heavy curvature and grades not found around Florida. FGC also found the extended dynamics worked well on the heavy RockTrain moves which regularly employed DPU operation.
