Open Hoppers–Coal

Typical Georgia Road “peaker” Powder River Coal train used to augment customer owned fleets. At times, demand spikes due to extreme summer heat or winter coal. Additional trainsets have to be added to the normal generator owned company sets to ensure enough coal is on-hand at the coal-fired electric generating steam plants. Here rebuilt SD70MAC-Es hold the lead and rear DPU position with the DPU featuring the “Respect the Red” railroad operating rules compliance program. Another rebuilt, this time a SD70MAX remanufactured from an ex UP SD9043MAC and GE AC4000W lend their horsepower to move the train.

The business associated with moving coal for power generation and steelmaking occupies one of the top five revenue streams for Georgia Road. The largest part of the business unit is the transportation of coal to Southeastern electric generating plants. The Powder River Coal trains in particular account a major revenue stream where Georgia Road cycles multiple unit trains from Bill, Wyoming to various Southeastern Electric Generating Company (SEEGCO) in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. While SEEGCO supplies much of the coal handling equipment, Georgia Road maintains additional sets to handle peak demand periods. Fleets of railroad owned cars are also retained to service metallurgical coal customers, whether for domestic or export use.
